What is Dental Education Sponsorship? Dental Capacity supports the vision of local dentists for specialization in their respective field to become future dental leaders. This includes Masters programs, 4-year specialty residencies, and preparation training for admittance into these programs.

Project #3: Dental Education Sponsorship
Dr. Raphaël Yaradouno graduated from Université Gamal Abdel Nasser de Conakry as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). After graduation, Dr. Raphaël completed an 18-month intensive clinical training internship with Mercy Ships at the dental school. In August 2023, Dental Capacity (through our local partner Capacité Dentaire providing administration support) committed to sponsorship for Dr. Raphaël to take a 2-month TOEFL training course in preparation for attending a specialization program in an Anglophone dental school in the near future. Why are you studying English and why is it necessary to prepare for the TOEFL exam?

I plan to specialize in Oral Radiology, a topic which our dental school in Guinea currently has no teacher for instructing the students. I have looked at schools within Francophone countries, but there are no programs which meet the requirements I am looking for. The only schools with Masters programs in Oral Radiology exist through English speaking dental schools in Africa or abroad. To attend one of these schools, I am required to pass the TOEFL exam to show I am fluent in English to study at their university.
What have you learned so far studying English? How will it provide you opportunities in the future?

I have learned couple of things. Such as how to conjugate verbs in different tenses, the use of prepositions correctly, new words and vocabulary, presenting in English, and even expressing myself. I knew some English before this training, but the school has improved my English significantly. The training is without any doubt an open door and a grace to get specialized in Oral Radiology.
