Dr. Aissatou Lamarana Diallo
Project #2: Dental Education Sponsorship

Dr. Aissatou Lamarana Diallo graduated from Université Gamal Abdel Nasser de Conakry as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).  After graduation, Dr. Lamarana completed an 18-month intensive clinical training internship with Mercy Ships at the dental school.  In March 2023, Dental Capacity (through our local partner Capacité Dentaire providing administration support) committed to sponsorship for Dr. Lamarana to master English through a 12-month language training program in Accra, Ghana.

Meet Dr. Aissatou Lamarana Diallo: Q & A with Dr. Lamarana

Why the English school?

I chose to train in English because I'd like to continue my post-graduate studies in English, which would make it easier for me to adapt to both the French and English-speaking systems, for better integration into my post-graduate and professional career.

In fact, I was very involved during my university studies and was the president of the students at Gamal Abdel Nasser University from 2019-2021. I had the privilege of working with students and personalities from different backgrounds and horizons during several conferences across Africa, and during our various exchanges I came to realize the importance of the English language in the scientific world. This led me to want to learn English to broaden my opportunities in terms of learning, research and later in socio-professional life.

What do you hope to do after English school?

After my training in English, I'd like to continue my post-graduate studies in public health. Although this training is available in French, it requires a good command of the English language, and this will be a major asset in achieving my future goals.

In my research, I have observed that all the best African and Western universities offering this specialization are in English-speaking countries, which is my main motivation for doing it in English.

Why Global Health?

During my academic internships in various health facilities in my country, I came across a considerable number of people suffering from serious complications of oral diseases, sometimes even leading to death due to lack of access to basic dental care. This prompted me to take a closer look at the issue of accessibility to dental care, especially in the interior of the country, hence the choice of my doctoral thesis topic on the factors determining non-use of oral health care in a prefecture of Guinea. This revealed that the lack of a nearby dental practice, lack of information on treatment and lack of financial resources were the major determinants of non-use of oral health care. Given these observations, I felt it was necessary to specialize in public health (health policy) to help improve my country's health system.

This specialization will enable me to take a multidisciplinary approach to public health policy, from prevention to the regulation of healthcare provision, via the governance of healthcare systems.

What are your long-term plans?

After my specialization, I'd first like to teach a course in preventive and social dentistry in the Department of Dentistry at the Gamal Abdel Nasser University in Conakry, with the aim of sharing the knowledge I've acquired during my training, as this course is not taught by a specialist in the field. In addition to this, I'd also like to publish scientific papers with the aim of contributing to the advancement of research in the dental field.

And given the challenges we face throughout the country, a rational use and application of the knowledge and skills acquired during this specialization in the field could enhance the Guinean health system and meet the challenge of accessibility to dental care.

Would you like to add anything else?

I recognize the immense opportunity I have been given to participate in this program, and I intend to rise to the occasion to represent women in the field of dental studies, to make my family and my country proud, and to make an impact on future generations of dentists in Guinea.
